Underwater Photography: Does the Camera Really Matter?

The camera does NOT matter. Many times I get asked if I should buy Nikon, Canon, this model or that model... what you should be asking is what kind of lenses you need for the type of photography you want to take. Yes, I'm talking here about DSLR cameras (more about point and shoot below). Spend less money in the body that has the features you are looking for, and spend the rest of your money in good lenses. A very good expensive camera with cheap lenses will deliver low quality photos; revert the order and you have a great combination.

When it comes to brand; it really doesn't matter either. Most photographers buy one brand over the other because they have some lenses already or they like the colors of the advertising. The reality is that all cameras these days can deliver great photographs if used with high quality lenses... so pick your brand and go buy a body that can get you good easy control over shutter speed, f-stops, ISO, white balance and has a decent photometer (which is not as important underwater as it is above the water). When it comes down to sensor size then you have to decide between Full Format (FX - sensor size equals to 35mm) or crop format (DX - which is 1.5x on a Nikon and 1.6x on a Canon). FX is much more expensive that DX and to me it does not make sense to spend the extra cash... I rather spend the difference in good lenses.

Don't get caught in the Mega-pixel marketing campaign! More mega-pixels don't mean better photos. Better lenses means better photos; again: spend your money in good quality lenses and forget the mega-pixel and camera features scheme. Some of my favorites Nikon D3100, 5100, D7000 or Canon Rebel T3, T3i or 60D. Don't discard older cameras that are awesome like the Nikon D40 with a flash sync speed 1/500 which you can get on eBay cheap these days (same goes for older Canon).

Wide Angle Photography

Ahh...wide angle photography, probably one of the easiest types of photo to take; but also one of the hardest to excel at. Have you ever tried to cram 30 people into a single photograph? You'd try to stack them, have some of them on the floor or even ask some of them at the back to jump at the press of the shutter!? You're also trying to make sure that you are able to see the faces of these people in the photograph. Difficult if your camera's lens is not wide enough and you have to move yourself further back to accommodate, which may not be possible if space is limited. When shooting indoors with flash, moving back may even give you an underexposed photograph, as flash is often not powerful enough to reach longer distances.

Apart from the utilitarian purpose of getting good group photographs, shooting wide angle lets you portray the scene in full detail with unusual and sometimes, exaggerated perspectives. This is especially true of super wide angle. Small objects can be made to appear larger than larger objects within the same scene, effectively shifting the balance of the image composition. When used well, it can bring attention to the subject of interest in the foreground, at the same time preserving the context of the whole image by showing the location or event in the background.

Digital Camera Photo Tip: Mug Shot To "Nice Shot!"

I'd like to talk to the digital compact camera shooters first. Guys and gals, you don't have an awful lot of options but you do have one or two. Compact cameras with very few exceptions provide only a small flash on the front of the camera. The flash is forward facing and very close to the lens, there is no way to change that. However you can get some relief by softening the light output.

I have found that a home remedy is best for compact camera flash. This solution is useful for times when we shoot in living room sized spaces. Simply tape a small piece of white gauze in front of the flash. Be careful that you don't use too many layers of gauze! This will cut down on the effective range of the flash but it will get rid of the spotlight effect and provide a softer illumination. I have also used waxed paper as the diffusing material and it can be just as effective on some cameras.

While these suggestions for the compact camera owner aren't very high-tech they do get the job done. As a side note this kind of flash diffuser is very helpful when taking pictures of babies! Because we tend to get very close to infants when we shoot, the naked flash can be very overwhelming. A little diffusion will always yield a better picture.

On to digital single lens reflex camera owners. As a group DSLR photographers have a universe of choice when it comes to flash control. Starting with the basics, let's look at your camera's built-in flash.

I'm going to begin talking about built-in flash by offering my own opinion. One of the most misguided features added to SLR's back in the 90's was built-in flash. They are under powered and they provide light that is not one bit better than a compact camera flash. Having said that I also must say that they do exactly what they were intended to do: provide light for taking snapshots indoors or adding fill light outdoors.

Just like the flash on a compact digital camera a DSLR's built-in flash cannot be moved or positioned. Even though there is a little more separation between the flash and the lens they still provide very direct, very flat light for people pictures. The good news is that the same diffusion concepts used on compact cameras will also work for DSLR's. However we aren't likely to get good results from gauze scraps or waxed paper.

For a DSLR's built-in flash it may be best to look to manufactured solutions. There are diffusers made by companies such as Promaster or Gary Fong that are very effective and safe to use on our cameras. Safe? Yes, these products won't damage the camera's hotshoe with tape residue or rest too close to the flashtube where melting could become a problem. Cleaning melted waxed paper off of a DSLR flash isn't easy or fun! And just as mentioned in the section on compact cameras a flash diffuser will reduce the working range of the flash.

There is a better way to immediately improve your people pictures. Add a hotshoe mounted flash to your DSLR. Adding this one accessory can make all the difference between mug shots and great shots.

The very first benefit comes from the increased distance between the camera's lens and the flash tube. Even these few added inches benefit your images because the lighting isn't aimed like a spotlight at the subjects face. Red eye is all but eliminated and skin tones can look more lifelike.

Hotshoe mounted camera flashes come from many manufacturers. Prices can be as low as .00 to well over 0.00. Usually a very good flash can be had for around 0.00 to 0.00. As the price goes up so do the power and the feature set.

I would suggest looking for good power, tilt and swivel motion on the flash head, solid construction and compatibility with your specific digital camera. And here is the rub: there are a lot of flashes out there that say they work with Canon or Nikon or Pentax, but are they compatible with digital versions of those brands? The answer must be "Yes" or it won't work on your rig. Avoid getting ripped off, if the deal looks so much better than the rest of the offerings chances are there is a reason.

Another big plus to adding a camera flash is that doing so opens up a thousand possibilities for diffusing the light - and diffused light is beautiful light. Believe it or not, using flash diffusers is one of the easiest ways to add creativity without adding technical mumbo jumbo. All the photographer has to do is select a diffuser, attach it to the flash and shoot.

Each flash diffuser produces a slightly different lighting pattern, a lighting signature if you will. Some work well at filling larger rooms but then overwhelm in your living room. Others may produce a glamour-like lighting that you just don't care for. The packaging or online descriptions of the diffusers will steer you in the right direction. Odds are the photographer will own several different diffusers over time, each with its specific purpose or look.

Camera flash and all of the available accessories provide tremendous creative opportunity and possibility. The immediate improvement to our people pictures by adding a hotshoe mounted camera flash is just the tip of the iceberg. In the future we will explore flash brackets, off-shoe flash cords and much more. For right now though, take the next step and add a camera flash to your outfit. Move from mug shots up to "Nice shot!" in one easy step.

Choosing a New Camera

With so many camera models to choose from where do you start? Well, the way I choose any new toy these days is to start at the end. What do you want it to do? Err . . . take pictures. Yes but what kind of pictures and what are you going to do with them? The other burning question is how much are you prepared to learn?

As you are reading this and have actually made it to paragraph two, I think we can assume that you are prepared to learn at least a little. So what do you want to do? Do you want something that you can keep in your pocket at all times so you can snap the kids? Do you want a camera that will allow you to take pictures in any lighting conditions from any distance (with the right gadget screwed on the front of course)? Is this going to be a hobby or just some quick snaps?

With the popularity boom of digital photography, and digital cameras, more and more people are getting serious about it this art and the technology that goes along with it. People are looking to get their first digital cameras, and in order to bring about excellence, as far as the photos themselves go, you simply can't go wrong with an SLR digital camera.

This is the type of camera that most professionals and extremely enthusiastic photographers use since it creates superior photos, and gives the photographer complete control over the images that he or she produces.

It's been said over and over that the most crucial element of any camera whatsoever is the lens. Basically the digital camera, just like the regular film camera, is only as good as the lens is.

In fact this is the main reason that most people decide to buy an SLR digital camera - is because of the notion that they can interchange the lenses in order to be more creative and versatile with their photography. Actually, this is the one variable of the digital SLR or D-SLR (Digital SLR) camera purchase that you have to be weary of. Many cameras on the market are labeled as D-SLR, yet some of them actually have a fixed lens. This drastically limits the photographer and therefore you must be cautious before the purchase, and know what you're actually getting.

Now perhaps if you're not as avid a photographer as some might be, but still want to take higher quality photographs, then a D-SLR might be the way to go. This actually may be exactly the camera for you...but if you're becoming serious about your digital photography and your wants and needs dictate, then you should get the D-SLR that allows for the lens to be interchangeable.

It's very important that you look at the available selection of lenses prior to purchasing your digital camera. Make sure that the variety of choice is substantial enough, and includes the type of lenses that you're looking for.

That leads nicely into the next point. Before you purchase any digital camera it's important that you know what you're looking to use it for, and how much power and resolution you'll need etc. It's important that you assess this before you start looking around for your camera because it will decrease a lot of the confusion and it will help you to get exactly what you want.

The size of the prints that you'll be creating falls directly into this part of the decision. The size of quality prints that you're able to create depends on the number of megapixels that your camera has. So for instance -- if you're looking to create large prints of 8 X 10 or more then it's probably to your benefit to get an SLR digital camera with no less than 8 megapixels.

This is all pretty much determined by the size of the image sensor. The image sensor ultimately is in direct correlation to how many pixels a camera has...and the count size of those pixels. Basically the larger the pixel count the better your camera gathers light giving you an enhanced low light performance with high ISO. The image sensor is also responsible for giving you a wider dynamic range.

Also important is the fact that the size of the image sensor makes a significant difference in how wide an angle of view your lens provides.

Here's how it works.

A smaller sensor will see a smaller segment of the image produced by the lens. If you've got a D-SLR camera with a full-frame image sensor, this means that you're getting the same size as a full 35mm film frame (36x24mm). Essentially, many digital photographers look to get as close to this as possible in order to have photos that are comparable to the ones that they've been able to achieve with their original film 35mm camera.

There are also other things to consider such as the LCD screen and its size, plus how many extra features that the camera has (if you want extra features). If you're more of a beginner with the SLR's and you like the idea of a little automation and extra help from your camera, then it's good to know that some entry-level and mid-range D-SLRs come equipped with subject modes. These will automatically set the camera for shooting subjects like close-ups, portraits, landscapes, action and many more. It's important to know that the more top line and professional level D-SLR's don't have this. This is why it's also a good idea to honestly establish your expertise level with digital photography

In a nutshell, if you stick to the major brands then you really can't go wrong, because nearly all of them have very high quality SLR cameras that will give you what you want and then some. So now you don't have to worry about how to choose the right SLR digital camera anymore. Now it's time to go and get one.

We went to two Eden Sessions this year, Kasabian for which I was allowed to bring my Nikon D90 in, and Paul Weller for which I was not I wasn't going to post my video clips, but due to the heavy handed and arbitrary rule change, one of several including whether or not you could take plastic water bottles in or not - I am now. Tim Smits, you are a great man, but allowing this kind of fascist behaviour to take place at Eden is disgusting. I am an amateur photographer, and just because I have camera with interchangeable lenses shouldn't disbar me from taking it in to the arena. As can be seen, these clips are far from broadcast quality, so to think I am going to make money from them is laughable. Instead, they might make people think what great bands and want to go and see them for themselves, thus increasing revenue for them. Certainly I am not taking money out of people's mouths in this way. Come on, stop this fascist behaviour now! and think what Eden is all about, sharing and trying to make the world a better place.

Basic Digital Camera Accessories - Filters Made For Digital Cameras

As any one who owns a digital single lens reflex camera will attest lenses can be quite an investment. Lenses that are optimized for digital project an image onto the camera sensor with high contrast, good color and sharp focus. As photographers we really do get a lot for our money when we purchase a lens. So why do we then install a regular old filter instead of one made to match the lenses optical quality?

I mentioned digitally optimized lenses before, but just what does that mean? While these lenses have several features that make them especially well suited to digital photography one of the main benefits lies in the coatings applied to the glass of the lens. Standard lenses have coating applied to almost every internal and external surface yet they tend to only have an anti-reflective coating on the exterior surface of the front element only. Digital lenses have the anti-reflective coating applied to all surfaces of the glass and this is a key component.

Interchangeable Lens Camera Nikon

The image sensors used inside digital cameras is highly polished and reflective. This isn't a design flaw, it's the only way they can be made in order to achieve sharp and focused images. Unfortunately it's the very reflectivity of the sensor that causes imaging problems.

Basic Digital Camera Accessories - Filters Made For Digital Cameras

As light from our subject passes through the camera lens it focuses on the image sensor. But because the sensor is so reflective some of that light bounces back up through the lens. Older lenses or those not digitally optimized lack the anti-reflective coatings on the back sides of the glass elements. The light that has bounced off of the image sensor strikes these uncoated elements and reflects once again back down to the image sensor. This twice reflected light is now out of focus and causes ghosting and loss of contrast in our image.

We can see that if the lens is made with anti-reflective coatings on the backsides of the elements that we can eliminate a significant source of image ruining stray light. The same principle applies to lens filters. It's difficult to find a filter without coatings; all of them in fact are coated in one way or another. However like the lenses just discussed standard filters lack the coatings on the backside of their glass.

Filters optimized for digital cameras have anti-reflective coatings on the back side of the glass element. Our digital lenses do a great job of not bouncing back reflected light to our camera's sensor, filters made for digital complete the job and allow the camera to capture the very best image.

Digital Or 35mm Camera - Time For A Change?

My family says I am stuck in the 70s. They have their reasons and there are many. One example is photography. I have used a 35mm single lens reflex camera since - well 1974. Yes, the same camera. This was a no frills, all manual, fantastic camera. I had the standard lens, 2 zooms, 2 wide angles, extenders, dozens of filters, flash, and macro adapters. The camera has served me well for more than 30 years. My family thought it was time for a change and that a digital camera would bring more enjoyment to my bird watching and nature walks. It was like saying goodbye to an old friend as I shoved the large camera bag to the back of our closet.

I finally have a digital camera. After holding out for several years for a digital camera with changeable lenses, I finally got the camera I wanted. Almost. Ok, this camera does not have the interchangeable lenses. I did some homework and studied the major differences in picture quality between cameras. Everything I read said "optical zoom" outperformed "digital zoom" for picture quality. But why? Simply put, optical zoom works throughout with the same number of pixels while digital zoom does not. Say you compare two 5 megapixel cameras - one with optical zoom and the other with digital. The optical zoom uses "optics" or lenses to magnify the image. This means the image retains 5 megapixels throughout the zoom range and therefore retains image quality. Not so with digital zoom. Again we start with a 5 megapixel image. Digital zoom enlarges a portion of the digital image. If your zoom ends with an image that is an enlargement of 25% of the original, this image will now have 25% or 1.25 megapixels. Quite a loss!

Interchangeable Lens Camera Nikon

The camera I now have has a 15X optical zoom with a 2X digital zoom. There is also something called "smart zoom". This handy feature allows you to retain a higher number of pixels even when using the digital zoom, resulting in a clearer picture that will stay clear at larger print sizes. Other brands now offer this feature under different names, so do your homework. Comparing these numbers to my old camera and its several lenses, I have in 35mm equivalents @ 40 to 205 with the optical zoom and 80 to 410 with the digital zoom on. All of this comes in such a compact package. No large bag, no changing of lenses, built in light adjustment - no filters. Maybe I waited too long!

Digital Or 35mm Camera - Time For A Change?

The proof is in the using though, isn't it? One of my hold backs to making the jump to digital is the lag time between the pushing of the button and the taking of the picture. I found that by turning off several options - focus size and face recognition are two - this lag drops considerably. In the most basic "automatic" setting, the lag time is cut to 7 milliseconds per the manual. Not bad, but enough to miss that action shot.

I took the camera on a road trip. After a few photo stops with a caravan of fellow British car owners, I became more impressed with my new toy. I like that pictures can be zoomed, cropped, and saved in the camera after a picture is taken. Night photos were awesome. The sensitivity - even in low light was something I could not have managed unless my 35 was on a tripod. This camera has image stabilization and apparently it works! Our next test was inside a cave. My son took most of the photos and again they were great. We used the flash and the low light settings and WOW was all we could say about the results. Sure, I could have gotten the same shots with my 35, but much slower and again the tripod would have been a must. The camera had passed every test to this point.

Nature photography was next. I like to photograph birds, deer, and whatever comes along during nature walks. Here, I found my first drawbacks. My old camera weighed several pounds with the long zoom lens and because of the lens length, the left elbow found a prop against my chest for steadying the camera. Not so with the digital. It is so light and small, I did have trouble holding it steady. I assume this is something I will grow accustomed to. The armadillo I surprised darted just as I snapped. I got him, but only partially - that lag cost me the shot. A grey heron was next. Some great shots until he started flying. I could have followed him with the 35, but with picture review on, this was a hopeless cause (being a male - I will read how to turn this auto review off later). Slightly frustrated, I tried unsuccessfully to catch up to a red tailed hawk. My fault - not the camera's. Remember, patience with nature gets the best shots.

Then came "the shot". Two monarch butterflies were flitting on some nearby flowers. I eased closer and started snapping. Still frustrated by the picture review, I was pleased nonetheless. Still butterflies are easy. What about flying butterflies? I was successful part of the time. The lag again did me in. But overall, the butterflies looked pretty good.

We began comparing these shots at home, zooming them in the camera. The missed armadillo shot was amazing. Sure, it was the head, shoulders, and one leg, but the clarity of his eyes and the vibrant colors were far better than I could have done with the old 35 under the same conditions. The butterfly pictures blew me away! I was shooting at 8.1 megapixel at full optical zoom. Using the 2x smart zoom, could that be what I think it is? WOW! Several of the butterfly pictures actually had the tongue of the butterfly, shown crystal clear, delving into the various petals! Amazing! Maybe with the 35, I would have gotten one. But not from the distance I was shooting and not this clearly. I am sold!

The bottom line is that with practice, reading the huge operators manual, and lots more shutter time this should become another great friend with which to share many outdoor adventures. Will this camera fill all my needs? Maybe. There are things I like and things I don't. I must become more familiar with the settings that reduce lag and focus time. Still, I see great adventures and amazing photos ahead. I think maybe I did wait too long, these digital cameras are great. Do your homework and compare before you buy. Most importantly, remember that optical zoom is always favored over digital.

Nikon D40 DSLR - Easy to Use Entry Level DSLR

Many people buy digital point and shoot cameras because of their compact size, but the negative is that they can never truly compare to the image quality provided by a DSLR camera. The Nikon D40 is a great compromise for those that want the great image quality provided by DSLR's and the lightweight provided by a digital point and shoot camera. The D40 is one of the lightest DSLR's on the market today and is produced by Nikon, one of today's leading camera manufacturers. The great thing about the D40 is that is has interchangeable lens capabilities that you don't get with your normal point and shoot. The D40 uses a Nikon DX Format CCD image sensor with 6.1 effective mega pixels.

The biggest negative about the D40 is that it lacks an internal focus drive motor. This means that it can only auto focus with AF-S and AF-I lenses and manual focus only with others. Although this means you can't use all the available lenses it is still compatible with some of the most popular lenses offered by Nikon and other manufacturers. Some features on the D40 include an ISO 3200 equivalent (HI 1), a customizable Auto ISO, short shutter lag and in camera retouching. In addition to the standard kit lens you may want to consider Nikons 18-200mm VR lens for longer zoom range, especially if you will be shooting your kids sporting events.
